I’m available as an online maths tutor specialising in MAT preparation (for Oxford and Imperial admissions) and the new spec Edexcel A-level and GCSE maths courses.
Short Bio
- Five years of tutoring experience with over 15 students
- Experienced tutor in teaching core MAT skills
- Very knowledgeable of new spec A-level and GCSE maths
- Grades: 3 A*s at A-level, distinction in AEA maths, 11 A*s (or equivalent) at GCSE
- Third year maths undergraduate at Oxford
Methodology
For the duration of this academic year, I have been teaching A-level maths online from University. Using Google's free Jamboard software, I am able to share my writing live with the student as we work over the same whiteboard (this is especially effective if the student also has an iPad and pencil to write with me).

Having taught students with a wide range of academic ability levels (at both foundation and higher level), I understand that very different teaching methods can be required in order to effectively communicate mathematical concepts and procedures. However, I do aim to ensure that the joy of uncovering, exploring and understanding new maths is at the forefront of my teaching, so my students can share the same enthusiasm I had during my college education.
Not only is this naturally a much more enjoyable approach to studying mathematics, but it also greatly prepares students for the significantly more demanding new specification. Of the many changes apparent in the new courses, the increased difficulty and obscurity of the questions is arguably the most significant, as it requires students to have a deeper grasp of the relevant concepts. Whereas the old spec often enabled students to reach the correct answers by simply memorising and applying a procedure, the new spec is less forgiving towards those who with a poor understanding of complex ideas. Therefore my approach of facilitating the student’s own discovery of many core concepts provides them with a much stronger foundation from which they can tackle the harder questions posed to them.
Additionally, when a student enjoys learning new material and feels proud of their improved understanding, they are much more likely to be able to stay determined as the revision hours crank up. It is undoubtedly still the case that consistent practice is required - our refrain ‘question-a-day’ is seared in my memory! - but I can promise that the seemingly endless hours of revision are much more bearable if you have a strong understanding.
James Booth tutored my 16-year-old son Jacob in mathematics for 4 months in the run-up to his GCSE exam. James was a true inspiration to Jacob who has extra learning needs, being dyslexic and with working memory difficulties. Jacob had quite a negative attitude to maths but came away with a much more positive approach after his lessons with James and all importantly he passed his GCSE against all expectations. Jacob is hugely grateful as he joins his sixth form college with all the requirements. James is an excellent communicator and was very perceptive in how he dealt with Jacob - he was approachable and able to make an excellent connection with him, being only a few years older than him. James' lessons were both useful and fun for Jacob and he came away with so much more confidence in Maths. He obviously planned lessons extensively and built-in reinforcement and revision. I was impressed about how Jacob was expected to try past papers and then gently pushed to be more independent in coping with the more complex questions. James is obviously a very talented mathematician but for us, it was so important that he is also a patient, kind and motivational teacher too. I would recommend James to teach mathematical-based subjects and his flexibility and ability to understand all situations are his strengths. I am a teacher my self so I hope my observations are especially valuable. I can be contacted by email if required.
James was a fantastic maths tutor for my daughter. She had been struggling for several years, and had previously worked with other tutors to no avail. However James was able to explain mathmatical concepts in a way that made sense to her, and it was wonderful to see her confidence build and her marks improve. We also asked James to tutor her in physics, and he achieved the same magic again! Lola could not have been more thrilled to get an A in her physics GCSE, and we would recommend James to anyone.
Coming from the South Coast, I am an avid boarder of all varieties. When we're gifted with good swell, I head out in search of surf. Otherwise, I spend most of my free time skateboarding or wakeboarding with my friends.
